Liverpool travel to the Emirates hoping to draw first blood ahead of what is a mammoth three match showdown in just six days against the Gunners. It won’t be the first time Rafael Benitez’s men have faced Arsenal in back-to back matches, having suffered both FA Cup and Carling Cup defeats within days of each other last season, and he will be hoping it is Liverpool’s turn to take the spoils when they go head-to-head in the Champions League Quarter-finals and the Premier League. It is only Liverpool’s second visit to the Emirates following the 3-0 league defeat their in the last campaign and the Reds will need to avoid a simliar experience this time out if we are to maintain our hopes of a sixth European crown. from liverpoolfc.tv

Liverpool have moved five points clear of Everton in the race for Champions League qualification after a 1-0 win in the 207th Merseyside derby.
Fernando Torres bagged his 28th goal of the season to secure victory and put the Reds firmly in control with six games remaining.

Rafael Benitez has revealed plans are already being made for next season – with three new players within his sights. |
| Despite facing into the most testing period of the season so far with today’s derby with Everton being followed by a triple header with Arsenal, the Liverpool boss has admitted there is already work going on behind the scenes ahead of the new campaign in August.
“We have agreements with two young players and one senior player who will be a starting XI player. That deal is already done,” he said. “We are also making plans for our pre-season tour and talking to players here about new contracts.” Sami Hyypia has already been offered a new deal by the Reds, with Benitez hopeful the big Finn will agree to extend his Anfield stay into a tenth year. from liverpoolfc.tv |

In recent years there has not been much more than local pride at stake when Liverpool and Everton have locked horns in the Merseyside derby… But times they are a changing. The Blues’ renaissance under David Moyes is well and truly under way and they are no strangers to finishing above the Reds – they secured fourth place in Rafa’s first season at Anfield in the 2004/05 season. This year there is a similar situation developing at the top, as we battle it out with Everton for the fourth and final Champions League spot. Many believe the result of the 207th Merseyside derby will go some way to determining who takes their place amongst Europe’s elite, although that wasn’t the case back in 2005 when the Reds won 2-1 at Anfield but ended up finishing fifth. Liverpool have already beaten the Blues this season after Dirk Kuyt’s double from the penalty-spot clinched a 2-1 success and they will be aiming to send Moyes and his men home empty-handed on this occasion, to secure not only the double over their nearest rivals, but also a psychological edge in the race for fourth. |
